terry fox run - you'll never walk alone

after reading munnster's blog, i've decided to join the terry fox run this year. =)

i'm going for the 4km run (there's a 7.5km one too), but i don't really plan to run...i'll probably end up bringing my camera along while i stroll through sentosa, taking pictures as i go...so don't be too impressed as of yet.

i've tried to call some people who i thought would be interested in this run too...but far too many people have "something on" that weekend...go-kart competitions lah, instant overseas holidays lah, sudden mysterious injuries lah, blah blah blah...ok...whatever...if alan heng can skip church to go, you can too.

anyway, if you wanna join me for this charitable cause, please drop me an email or something. you'll never walk alone. =)

wow! something to look forward to...after all that disappointment with cirque du soleil and charlie and the chocolate factory. =)

"There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done.
There are thousands to prophesy failure;
There are thousands to point out to you one by one,
The dangers that wait to assail you.
But just buckle in with a bit of a grin,
Just take off your coat and go to it;
Just start in to sing as you tackle the thing
That "cannot be done" and you'll do it."

nice night out

i met an old friend yesterday...

betty

betty was from my secondary school...you can read about some of the crazy things we did. we went to 鼎泰豐 (ding tai feng) at paragon for dinner, and had the standard issue of 小菜 (seaweed and veggie), 酸辣汤 (hot and sour soup), 拉面 (noodles), and my personal favourite 小龙包 (dumplings). everyone seems to order the same things when they go there...maybe they should just come up with a set meal of the above-mentioned food... =)

afterwards, we made our way to nydc outside heeren, where we shared a nice healthy portion of manhattan mudpie...chocolate always seem to make girls happy. haha.

manhattan mudpie

then betty showed me some of the photos that she took on her trip to cambodia last week...she got some pointers from jo. we went through 88 pages of her picture-diary-journal!!!

betty laptop mudpie

then i got a call from my alcoholic colleague, jaime, who insisted that we go to ice cold beer (muahaha)...where she promptly became good friends with betty.

instant bestfriends

jaime kept telling betty my dark secrets from the office...blah blah blah...one thing led to another before they had yet another titillating conversation that i wished i hadn't started.

moby: so, how old do you think jaime is?
betty: *looks at jaime* you look like you're only 22...
*moby faints*
jaime: you're kidding! don't bluff lah! i look so much older than you...
betty: no lah! YOU look younger! *giggle giggle*
jaime: no way...YOU are definitely younger! *giggle giggle*"
*moby wakes up, pukes...faints again*
jaime: btw...where do you go for your manicures?
*moby goes off in search of higher intelligence*

just the 3 of us

betty had to leave cuz she wasn't feeling well in the first place...kudos to her for even coming out... =)

jason and fiona decided to come and take her place. i think fiona likes jason. muahahahaha.

after hanging out at mac's earlier, audrey invited jason and i to this steamboat buffet thing at tiong bahru...but since jason was in a very anti-social mood, i went to meet audrey alone. anyway, the steamboat was so filling, and not to mention hot and spicy, that we had to go to wine company to drink something. muahaha. any excuse will suffice.

jason has a fetish of going to macdonald's to read his cockanoddin medical books in order to prepare for his upcoming interview at the university of sydney...ooo...someone's gonna be a doctor soon hor!!! anyway, we were both bored to death at home, so he came to pick me up to go...where else...

our songs

i was just listening to music on my mp3...when a few of the songs that my ex-girlfriend(s) and i dubbed "our song(s)" started playing...just thought that i'd jot them down here before i forget them all when i grow older and stop having this kinda "our song" fetish.

1. yunxi (韵曦) and i listened to chinese songs...from andy lau (刘德华) to jackie cheung (张学友)...we loved them...shocked? i still am. i credit my limited range of chinese karaoke songs that i can sing to these teenage days. anyway, we got together one week before valentine's day...so naturally, being the insecure kid that i was (my first girlfriend what...damn kan chiong ok...), i wanted to give her something on v-day to imprint myself into her memory...well sort of. so i bought a faye wong (王菲) cd...cuz there were two songs inside that would remind her of me...天空 (sky) and 棋子 (chess). for those of you who don't know...my chinese name is 天骐 (aiyah, quite difficult to find a song that has "骐" inside lah)...so i figured that the combination of the two songs would kinda be like a reminder to her of my existence. haha. and that was how these two songs became "our song(s)". silly. yeah, i know. two years later, one week before valentine's day, she broke my heart and changed my life forever...literally. i wouldn't be sitting here in my farrer court home now if it weren't for her...i'd probably be "yo-yo-yo"ing with those punks in the states...but everything happens for a reason right? =)

2. kat and i were both very emotional and sentimental people. the circumstances under which we got together was rather messy. she was the outgoing vice-president of the hall in her senior year. she was the girlfriend of the poster boy of the hall, johan. she was the diamond of her batch (ok lah...suyin was pretty chio also lah...but that's another story for june...haha). i was a blur freshman. not much of a poster boy. still growing up and still yearning for 韵曦. but anyway, in short, we got together...and the whole hall (especially the seniors) was stunned to disbelief...(but that's another story for another rainy day). it started a few months after she broke up with johan, when i went to her room one night to watch tv...and then "nothing compares to you" by sinead o'connor started playing on the radio...so i made my move by asking her to slow dance with me. haha. how cheeky. but she agreed, and we had an awkward dance there in the hostel room. i guess it's kinda cute when i think back. anyway, when the time came to choose "our song" (again) i actually wanted sinead o'connnor's song. but then after listening more closely to the lyrics, i realised that it's actually a fucking sad song (i'll post the lyrics some other day)...so we decided on the song that must have been every other couples' song as well at that time..."all my life" by k-ci and jojo (aiyah...stop laughing...admit it lah...YOU'VE ALSO BEEN AT THAT STAGE BEFORE!!!)...but we stuck to it throughout our 3-and-a-half-year-on-and-off relationship. and up till now, i've never met anyone who's loved me more than kat...all my life...the sacrifices that she's made for me, the numerous "huh?? what's she doing with him???" comments in the hall (and maybe even outside of the hall), the tears she's cried...it pains me so to have broken her heart...so many times. but everything happens for a reason right? =)

3. caris and i were together for about 2 weeks. not really enough time to choose "our song"...which means this entry will be as brief as our relationship. but everything happens for a reason right? =)

4. mandy was my good friends' ex-girlfriend. notice it's "friends'" and not "friend's". another criminous relationship which stirred up a lot of shit in the hall. not really keen on elaborating in case i offend people...but then again, this is MY blog...so anyway, she started hanging out with me more and more...up to a point where she'd stay over and stuff, but i was always quite reluctant to get together with her because of 3 good reasons...good friends darren, suthesh and chen fye. it turns out that only the middle one had a problem...and made it very clear that it was either him or her...even though he was already happily attached...but i made a decision and told mandy that i chose him...which really pissed her off cuz she didn't see why he could dictate who she could go out with...and in a way, i saw her point, and didn't or chose not to see my friend's...is that how love is blind? our song was "yellow" by coldplay...cuz when we were having that fateful conversation, it was at night on the rooftop of the engineering faculty, looking at the stars. mandy broke up with me in february the following year cuz she said that she didn't love me, but we got back together in may cuz she said she missed me (sounds like the lyrics to some michael bolton song)...only for me to fuck it up. literally (another story, another day). in the end, i lost a good friend for someone who wasn't really serious about me. but everything happens for a reason right? =)

5. adeline was the girl that i put in the most effort. i loved her the most, though i know not why. when we first started dating, i'd go over to her house on the weekends, and have lunch...we were neighbours back then, so it all seemed pretty innocent (haha). after lunch, in order to avoid those awkward silence spells, i'd ask her to play the piano for me (she was and still is a part-time piano teacher)...which she'd happily oblige to. one of the songs that she played was johann pachelbel's "canon in d". i used to ply my trade for the string orchestra back in njc, and it used to be one of the songs that we played...so i knew each and every note that she played (and also if she played them wrong!! haha), and was thrilled to hear the classic piece again, after so many years of absence...the string instruments would come in one by one, like the gentle waves on the shores of bintan...followed by the slow crescendo of all the instruments into a cauldron of beautiful music, swirling and swerving with each note...until the finale, which curtains with a collective sigh...as if the composition were sad that it was the end. mr. pachelbel, you're a genius. so anyway, after we got together, it wasn't difficult finding "our song"...although adeline did mention "love me" by collin raye...but i thought that it had no connection whatsoever to us and our relationship...so "canon in d" it was. for her 22nd birthday, i went to her parents' house (she'd already moved back in with her parents by then) with a bouquet of 22 red roses, blindfolded her, and brought her back to my place, still blindfolded, where i sat her down and started playing "canon in d" for her on my viola. i almost started crying myself, i was so touched by her reaction. i thought at that point of time, i would never (and would never have to) love another person more. all that changed in february this year (ttmc can tell you everything if you wanna know)...but everything happens for a reason right? =)

p.s. - hmmm...i just realised something...60% of my ex-girlfriends broke up with me in february...the supposed month of love. "wake me up, when february ends"...hmmmm...doesn't sound quite right leh...i guess it's back to the drawing boards again... =)

disorganised

my golf instructor postponed our proficiency certificate test tomorrow. i'm damn pissed. i hate it when my schedule gets screwed around with. if i put it in my organiser, it better happen loh. don't make me freaking scratch it out...i hate imperfections in my organiser...it makes me feel so...err...disorganised.

i'm not trying to sound like a very organised person, but i just hate sudden changes in my expectations...like the day when i was suddenly told by my boss to give a presentation to some client...i completely fucked that up cuz i wasn't prepared...and like the time when i was suddenly told by my ex-girlfriend that she wanted to get back together...and i completely fucked that up cuz i wasn't prepared either...

knn lah...next time just give some advanced notice can or not...if you want me to do the talking to the client, please hor...just tell me lah...if you're developing feelings for me again, please hor...just tell me lah. i'm sick of being taken for granted. time doesn't travel slower in my world...tomorrow's still only 24 hours away.

cirque du soleil

cirque du soleil is coming again!!! wowsers!!! i've been a fervent and dedicated supporter of them ever since i watched their first performance here back in 1999 or so...

"Cirque du Soleil is an international organization founded in Quebec, Canada, dedicated to the creation, production and performance of artistic works. Its mission is to Invoke, Provoke and Evoke the imagination, the senses and the emotions of people around the world. Cirque du Soleil offers theatralized performances that mix the arts of the circus and the street, and features original music, light effects and costumes."

i've watched 2 of them so far...all in singapore. the first one was with kat, my ex-girlfriend no. 2...i was still an undergrad at that time...but she was working already by then, so she bought the most expensive tickets in the house to watch saltimbanco...and we had a wonderful night...it was really a far cry from the old circus acts that i had seen in the states...amazing stunts, stunning contortionists, mindblowing tricks, hilarious clowns...saltimbanco actually means...

"Saltimbanco" is a celebration of life. Conceived as an antidote to the violence and despair so prevalent in the 20th century, this phantasmagoria offers up a new vision of urban life, overflowing with optimism and joy. Saltimbanco is anything but linear; rather, it is a kaleidoscope, a whirlwind, an adventure in which anything can happen. Saltimbanco has its own special language, and its spirit is conveyed through voice, movement and music.

saltimbanco

the second performance that i watched was alegria. i was still an undergrad then, but this time, i caught the performance with mandy, ex-girlgriend no. 4. we were both undergrads, so i remember scrimping and saving every last cent to buy the tickets. luckily food wasn't an issue back then cuz we had our meals provided in the hall...so i managed to squeeze enough money out of my folks (i think i told them i needed more textbooks or something), and bought some pretty decent seats to watch cirque du soleil again (i know, i know...i shouldn't lie...blah blah blah...). the thing about cirque du soleil is that every show is different...it's beyond theatre, it's beyond the circus...it's magical. anyway, alegria means...

"Alegria" is a mood, a state of mind. The themes of the show, whose name means "jubilation" in Spanish, are many. Power and the handing down of power over time, the evolution from ancient monarchies to modern democracies, old age, youth is against this backdrop that the characters of Alegria play out their lives. Kings' fools, minstrels, beggars, old aristocrats and children make up its universe, along with the clowns, who alone are able to resist the passing of time and the social transformations that accompany it.

alegria

the third one that coming up is another differently themed cirque du soleil performance. and from the sound of it, quidam will be different...though the first two actually kinda scared me a bit...in a dark way, i think that this upcoming one would really get my old noggin running again. that's the great part about cirque du soleil...other than wowing you with their stunts and whatnots, it makes you think about what they're trying to get across, and what the actions mean...the themes and synopses written will help to stretch your imagination, and make things clearer...in a quirky sorta way...or maybe i'm just a dreamer. muahahaha. quidam is...

"Quidam": a nameless passer-by, a solitary figure lingering on a street corner, a person rushing past. It could be anyone, anybody. Someone coming, going, living in our anonymous society. A member of the crowd, one of the silent majority. The one who cries out, sings and dreams within us all. This is the "quidam" that Cirque du Soleil is celebrating. A young girl fumes; she has already seen everything there is to see, and her world has lost all meaning. Her anger shatters her little world, and she finds herself in the universe of Quidam. She is joined by a joyful companion as well as another character, more mysterious, who will attempt to seduce her with the marvelous, the unsettling, and the terrifying.

quidam

even if all these things that they write in the synopses on their official website is all a build up for the performances, i'd still like to believe that what they're doing is for the betterment of society. besides entertaining the crowds with their acrobatic powers, they provoke thought and imagination...besides doing aforethought-humanly-impossible acts, they motivate and entice the dreamers to come out from within...besides making silly-self-depreciating-universal-language-jokes, they teach us how to laugh at ourselves and our mistakes. sometimes i think that i'd go crazy if i didn't watch these crazy people. don't you? =)

ice cold beer

took the day off today...cuz i went to ice cold beer last night with jaime and her sister till late...so i decided to take it easy today by going to ice cold beer with winnie and her friend jiani. go figure. haha.

winnie & jiani

winnie & jiani acting cute

moby & winnie

oh yeah, i forgot to mention...i lost one side of my contact lens (that winnie gave me for free) last night at the same venue, so i had to wear the plastic thing on my nose today (that adeline made for me for free)...i know, i know...it's totally not me...but it's good to know optometrists huh? =)

jiani & moby

winnie is a vainpot, so i had to take a picture of her alone...some say she looks like fann wong...err...ok...you get casted into a movie with jackie chan then you tell me that lah hor? hahaha.

winnie

fann

after a while, it got a bit tiring talking to the girls about michael owen and why he moved to newcastle...especially if they're only into his looks and not interested in the footballing bit.

moby bored

btw, i'm fucking pissed that he didn't go back to liverpool. i don't wanna watch the liverpool vs. newcastle match...whenever that is. it'll be a heartbreaking match...the prodigal son doesn't return. =(

ice cold beer is pretty good...the dj plays whatever i want...cheap beer...and all the girls look pretty after the fourth / fifth beer...what else could a guy ask for... =)
